About

Raised on a farm in Denmark and educated in the UK and Australia, Dr. Christine Eriksen is driven by a curiosity about local environmental knowledge and the societal coping capacities generated by it.
By bringing natural hazards and, in particular, wildfires into dialogue with social geography, she gained international recognition as a ground-breaking disaster researcher. Her work demonstrates a commitment to qualitative research that is applied, collaborative, and interdisciplinary.
After completing her PhD in 2010, she continued working as a social scientist at the University of Wollongong, Australia until 2020. She then relocated to Switzerland to work as a senior researcher in the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zürich.
Since August 2023, Christine has been the Principal Investigator of a 5-year project focusing on community resilience to wildfires in Europe (FiRES). The FiRES project is funded by a Consolidator Grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation, and is hosted by ETH Zürich (after an initial 2 years at the University of Bern).
